Scrub Playback in the iPod

Of course we all love music!  How about podcast or audiobook?  Are you fond of listening to them as well?
When you're listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook, you can tap the progress slider at the top of the screen to move to another section of the track. But since the size of most (or some) average adults' fingers are relatively large for the iPod screen, it's a little bit hard to scroll accurately.  What if you just want to back up a few seconds?

Google Earth for iPhone and iPod Touch updated to version 2.0

Google has updated its Earth application to v2.0 for iPhone and iPod touch devices, according to a company blog post. Several new features have been added, including the ability to sync content between desktop computers and Apple's handheld devices. Earth's user experience has been improved and new languages have also been added.

Users can now create custom maps on their desktop computers and access them from their iPhone and iPod touch devices using their Google Maps account. User experience has been improved with a small glow that emanates from icons when they are being touched, better indicating to users which icons they are about to click. Thirteen new languages have also been added to the software, bringing the total to 31.

Users can download version 2.0 of Google Earth from iTunes App Store.

iPod Nano battery drain results

CNET Labs finished their panel of battery drain tests for the fifth-generation Apple iPod Nano, and the results are better than expected. Testing for continuous playback of audio and video, the Nano reached an average of 33.6 hours of audio or 5.3 hours of video.

Given Apple's own modest battery rating of 24 hours of audio or 5 hours of video, we expect Nano owners will be happy to know they have a little extra time to squeeze from their iPods

Battery rating is very important for me. Based on my experience, usually, the specs given by manufacturers with regards to battery rating is the ideal one.  That is why it's good to know that the Apple iPod nano battery drain test results conducted by CNET's Labs surpassed Apple's own rating!

Disney launching iPhone, iPod touch applications

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co is launching free iPhone and iPod touch applications, giving fans access to Disney content and interactive features anywhere.

Disney.com, part of the Disney Interactive Media Group, said it will offer users of the popular Apple Inc devices items like the new "Click2Life" feature that lets fans take pictures of images from the Disney.com Web site, and eventually in the physical world, and unlock exclusive content.

For instance, a teenager may one day see a poster of an upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" film in a mall, snap a picture of the poster with an iPhone and then generate video content related to that picture or character.

Jason Davis, vice president of Disney.com, said in an interview that the media giant realized it already had a huge audience of iPhone and iPod touch users for its content on its existing mobile application on Disney.com.

Disney.com reaches nearly 31 million unique visitors per month and said that among mobile Web sites, it ranks as the No. 1 entertainment mobile site.

It also has an expanding lineup of many paid applications currently available in Apple's App Store including Toy Story Mania!, Disney Fairies Fly, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Breakspin.

"Our iPhone and iPod touch traffic is heavily made up of kids and moms. The iPod touch has a very specific demographic geared to the tween," he said, adding that within Disney content, there are various safety controls.

"Because the applications are self-contained, once you're in the application, you can't get into anything else," he said.

The new application organizes Disney-branded content within one destination on each device, lets users interact with Disney characters through customizable photo frames and audio greetings, listen to Radio Disney live, watch music videos and buy Disney music on Apple's iTunes Store.

A lot of people like the iPod Shuffle because it's sooo small but it's HUGE when it comes to features! 
An mp3 player that talks?!...and speaks 20 different languages?!  I used to see this type of technology in movies when I was a kid, in movies played in a VHS player! =)

Nike + iPod Compatible Remote or Heart Rate Monitor

According to AppleInsider, the new 5G iPod Nano that has a built-in pedometer will also be compatible with an upcoming Nike-branded heart rate monitor.   The evidence of the device exists in the latest Nike+ iPod user guide, posted on Apple's Web site.

The section entitled "Linking a Nike + iPod Compatible Remote or Heart Rate Monitor" is on page 20.

The iPod touch and the big picture

In a New York Times interview of Steve Jobs conducted by Engadget columnist aspirant David Pogue, Apple's CEO suggested that the company did not include a camera on the iPod touch because the company was now marketing the iPod touch as a game machine and that a camera was not germane to such a device. "We don't need to add new stuff," said Jobs.

But why is adding a digital camera any less germane to the portable game device of the iPod touch than it is to adding it to the media player of the iPod nano? Or, if price is an issue, why not exclude it only on the entry-level model? The iPod touch market will soon be large enough to support such diversity. And if the iPod touch is indeed being marketed as a gaming console and a low-cost point of entry to the app store, excluding a camera disrupts the continuity of the touch/iPhone platform, while the iPod imaging message is now more muddled: If you're buying the iPhone 3G, you can capture stills but not video, while the "lower-end" iPod nano offers video capture but not stills, the iPod touch offers neither, and only the iPhone 3GS offers both.
Since the iPod's introduction, a few media players with integrated cameras have entered (and failed) in the marketplace: the Archos camcorder and Olympus m:Robe. While the camcorder-enabled iPod nano will surely sell orders of magnitude more than those products did, the video camera feels no less tacked on. Quite to the contrary when it comes to portable gaming, Nintendo, the longstanding market share leader in handheld games, added a camera to its DSi, and a rear-facing one at that.

To be fair, an iPod nano with embedded camcorder does enable Apple to market a Flip competitor that is significantly smaller than the Flip mino, with a screen size closer to even bulkier competitors such as the Kodak Zi8 -- although it lacks HD video capture. The candybar camcorder market has been small by iPod standards, but it continues to attract more competitors -- Samsung, for example, recently launched the HMX-U10.

The Jobs interview does offer a potential clue to what was perhaps a more pressing concern in integrating a camera into the touch. Explaining why the nano was limited to recording video and not stills, Jobs mentioned that adding both would have made the nano a significantly thicker device; Apple has consistently pointed with pride at the thinness of its mobile and portable devices.

Particularly with the thin Zune HD (and its OLED screen) entering the fray, Apple is likely loathe to bulk up the incredibly slim iPod touch. I suspect that the protests of users will eventually change Apple's mind; even FM radio has made it into the iPod after all this time. But for the next year, at least, iPod touch users may be condemned to carry a separate digital camera and endure burdens such as optical zoom, image stabilization, and vastly better image quality.
